Hasons Pipe & Precast Plant Surpasses Major Safety Milestone

Cambridge, Ont., facility achieves 1 million man-hours without a Lost Time Incident, the second Hanson plant to do so in 2013.

(CAMBRIDGE, ONT.) – Hanson Pipe & Precast’s Cambridge, Ont., plant recently surpassed 1 million man-hours without a Lost Time Injury. The plant, which manufactures precast concrete structural products, including concrete box culverts, reinforced concrete pipe, maintenance holes and catch basins, accomplished this milestone in a span just under seven years.

The Cambridge plant, a 43-acre facility with approximately 100 workers and an output capacity of 250,000 tons, instills safety best practices deep into its culture from the first day of hire and reinforces them every day on the job. Team members participate in daily departmental pre-shift inspections, weekly “toolbox talks,” monthly joint Health and Safety Committee meetings, and quarterly plant-wide safety meetings. New and returning employees undergo a full “Safety Indoctrination” program that includes training on lock-out/tag-out, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, fire safety, accident investigation, forklift safety, ladder safety, company policies and more.

In addition, Hanson’s Cambridge facility encourages open communication about safety, ensuring employees feel comfortable reporting potential safety issues—and addressing those issues promptly.

“Safety is part of everyday conversation at Hanson Building Products, with the goal of ensuring our employees leave work each day injury-free,” said Chris Saurenmann, SVP of Operations at Hanson Engineered Products. “We are extremely proud of our Cambridge staff for achieving this significant accomplishment, which is a testament to their hard work, dedication, leadership and diligence.”

The Cambridge plant is the second Hanson Building Products operation to achieve this safety milestone in less than four months. In January, the Grand Prairie, Texas, location of Hanson Pressure Pipe, a sister division, surpassed 1 million man-hours without a lost-time injury.
