(DALLAS) –Hanson Pressure Pipe’s Grand Prairie, Texas, plant recently surpassed 1 million man-hours without a Lost Time Injury (LTI). A Lost Time Injury is defined as any work-related injury or illness that results in an employee being unable to work a full assigned shift. The plant achieved this remarkable safety milestone during the week of January 21, 2013. This accomplishment and the plant’s exemplary safety record speak volumes about the culture of the 400 employees working at the 110-acre site.
“Sending our employees home injury-free is our No. 1 priority,” said Chris Saurenmann, vice president of operations at Hanson Engineered Products. “To achieve this level of safety excellence while working at a plant with extremely high production volumes is a true testament to our local leadership and their workforce.”
At Hanson Pressure Pipe, workplace safety is a core value and an integral component of the company’s culture of continuous improvement. The company’s new hires receive safety training during the orientation process prior to beginning work, and the management team reinforces desired behaviors and outcomes through daily departmental pre-shift meetings, monthly committee meetings and quarterly plant-wide safety meetings. These efforts are also reinforced by superintendents walking the floor performing safety task audits to acknowledge positive behavior or correct any observed mistakes.
“Employees should have the responsibility and authority to work safely,” said Charlie McAuley, vice president of operations for Hanson Pressure Pipe. “This achievement shows a workforce committed to making safety a part of an overall culture of excellence.”
With a capacity of more than 250,000 tons, the Hanson Pressure Pipe facility in Grand Prairie manufactures B-303 bar-wrapped concrete pipe, L-301 pre-stressed concrete lined pipe, E-301 pre-stressed concrete embedded pipe and S-200 mortar lined steel pipe with a full complement of fittings. The plant has been producing quality concrete pipe products since 1947. In 2003, the company added a state-of-the-art steel pipe plant at the Grand Prairie location.
